14th NOVEMBER, 2017, LONDON and SAN FRANCISCO: Leading identity verification provider Onfido today announces the launch of its Facial Check with Video. The new feature asks users to perform a randomised sequence of actions during the verification process, to prevent even the most sophisticated spoofing attempts. Coupled with a document check, the Facial Check with Video offers online businesses the most robust protection against fraud. Onfido’s Facial Check with Video provides added security at the point of new user sign-up. The check, available via Onfido’s SDK, prompts users to film themselves repeating numbers and performing randomised movements. Using machine learning, the short video is then checked for similarity against the image of a face extracted from the user’s identity document. Crucially, the Facial Check with Video detects liveness, so facial checks can’t be spoofed by fraudsters using a stolen photo or identity document. The Facial Check with Video provides the most robust liveness detection currently available on the market. Other solutions, which prove liveness with eyeball tracking or by asking users to blink, can easily be circumvented by taking a video from the internet or using a photo of a person with eye holes cut out.
By contrast, Onfido’s technology tracks the way that different elements of the face interact – the way the jaws and lips move when the subject is speaking, for instance – to rule out the possibility of a fraudster gaining unauthorised access. “Identity theft accounts for half of all reported fraud in the UK and is also the fastest growing crime in the USA,” explains Husayn Kassai, CEO and co-founder of Onfido, “but the problem goes beyond mere inconvenience.
This risk of fraud actively limits growth for many businesses, who may be nervous of implementing remote onboarding solutions due to the higher threat they represent. This in turn restricts access to online services for a huge number of potential users. The Facial Check with Video is currently being rolled out to Onfido’s customers in the US and UK. Its launch follows the company’s recent Series C funding round, in which Onfido raised $30m investment from Microsoft Venture Partners, Salesforce Ventures and others to drive further research and development for its identity verification technology.
